"Altruistic Service: the Way of Interreligious Tolerance"
After a successful project in Paramaribo last year, 2007 Suriname organizers have decided to hold a 2008 project in Brokopondo.
Brokopondo is a very famous district in Suriname. The Brokopondo Lake/Reservoir produces hydroelectric power that supplies electricity to more than half of Suriname's population. The Brokopondo district is largely a rainforest paradise, containing numerous beautiful waterfalls and large wildlife reserves. Brokopondo's population of 8000 includes indigenous peoples and other Surinamese from various ethnic groups.
Suriname's Minister of Education and Youth recognizes the urgent need for the community center to be repaired and painted, and the soccer field to be refurbished. RYS would is seeking to partner with the city on this project. Volunteers are needed. The project will also include landscaping a nature trail from the community center to the Brokopondo Lake.
In general, participants will not only have the opportunity to serve the local people of the community, but also the chance to learn about the indigenous people and the history and development of Suriname.
We hope that many young people will be inspired to join us for this unique experience in Suriname. RYS Suriname 2008 seeks to draw participants from many different cultures and religions that can cooperate together in loving service to the Suriname people.
This project is for young people aged 17-25.
Project cost: US$450 (International Participants), US$150 (Regional Participants). Limited Scholarships are available.
