Darjeeling, West Bengal, India: August 25 - 31, 2009
Taking Responsibility and Developing Compassion
Darjeeling, more popularly known to the world for aromatic tea, is a city of considerable beauty. Its scenic backdrop includes the breathtaking Mount Kanchenjunga and it is nestled among the rolling hills of the Himalayas. Darjeeling is often called the "Queen of the Hills" and provides a perfect location for those seeking harmony with nature.
Many people in Darjeeling are living in poverty. The lack of education and alternative income sources have played a major role in keeping the people poverty-stricken. Tea gardens, that have been a solitary source of income, are currently in decline, leaving people financially challenged. As a result of citizens' desperation, the environment is being more and more misused. Now, both the physical and social environments are out of balance. Therefore, RYS 2009 will take the initiative to construct a small "Community Hall" for multipurpose use. This hall will help the villagers create a much needed community support system.
Through their service to the community, the volunteers will seek to model sincere global cooperation - i.e., to create a network of individuals and organizations dedicated to building a world of peace in which everyone can live together in freedom, self-respect and prosperity. This model will hopefully serve as an example for educating and training underprivileged people, empowering them physically, socially, economically and intellectually.
The RYS India 2009 project will promote religious tolerance and cooperation among young people as a foundation for peace. Participants will share and learn about each other's religious and cultural traditions and languages.
This RYS project includes an educational workshop, outings, ongoing cultural exchange, and the cultivation of friendship through sports, as well as focused community service. Volunteers from all nations are welcome.
